BUPC calls 24-hr Nandigram bandh on March 3

Nandigram, (WB) Mar 2: The Bhumi Uchched Pratirodh Committee (BUPC) called a 24-hour bandh in Nandigram on March 3 to protest the alleged attack of CPI(M) cadres on BUPC members, injuring four. Four BUPC members were shot at allegedly by CPI(M) cadres at Satengabari village, according to East Midnapore SP S S Panda.

Mr Panda said one of the injured Debashish Mondal(25) of Keyakhali village who received a gunshot injury in his lower abdomen was first admitted to Maheshpur Health Centre and then transferred to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata this evening. Mr Panda said the encounter started between the two groups throwing bricks and then it turned into an exchange of fire. Three other BUPC supporters with minor injuries have been admitted to local hospitals.

Mr Subhendu Adhikari, Convener of BUPC and MLA, alleged that CPI(M) was trying to create terror in the area prior to the visit of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

Security has been beefed up in the area for the visit of the Chief Minister on March 4 after this incident, Mr Panda said. The Chief Minister will address a public meeting at Sitananda College maidan in Nandigram after distributing 224 acres of Patta land to 1710 farmers in Nandigram I block on March 4.
