Modernisation of Forces, a continuous process: Lt Gen Kumar
Jalandhar, Mar 1 (UNI) Vajra Corps General Officer Commanding Lt Gen SS Kumar, while reacting to an increase of 10 per cent in the annual budget for defence, which includes a major chunk for modernisation, said modernisation of the forces was a continuous process and any increase in the budget was welcome.
Lt Gen Kumar, who was talking to mediapersons here on the occasion of 59th Raising Day of the Corps, said despite major shortfall in officers' grade, Army would not compromise with the quality to increase the strength of officers.
Earlier, Lt Gen Kumar laid a wreath at the Corps War Memorial in the memory of those gallant soldiers, who laid down their lives for the sake of the nation.
Later, Lt Gen Kumar addressed a special sainik sammelan on the occasion. He recalled the glorious history of the Corps and complimented all ranks on their professionalism and commitment. He stressed on the need to maintain vigil and be prepared for all eventualities.
He also directed all ranks to be proficient in handling modern weapons and use technology to enhance military skill and prowess.
The Vajra Corps was raised on March 1, 1950 at Ambala by Lt Gen Kalwant Singh. Corps Headquaters moved to Jalandhar in July 1951 with the mandate of defence of Punjab.
The Corps took active part in both the 1965 and 1971 operations.
The majors gallantry awards won by the Corps during wars includes one PVC, seven MVC and 14 VrC.
