Mumbai, Mar 1: Chairman of Council for Leather exports Mukhtarul Amin expressed his disappointment over the Union budget for 2008-09.
Reacting to the budget here today, he said that the leather industry has been completely neglected by the Union Government. He expressed deep concern at the way, the issues relating to export industry, particularly the leather industry, were addressed in the budget. Mr Amin said that the industry is already facing a tough time due to the appreciation of rupee against the dollar.
''The danger of laying off more employees has become real now. It is expected that at least one lakh employees would lose their job as a result of rupee appreciation,'' Chairman said.
Leather Industry is an important component of country's manufacturing sector, producing goods worth Rs 30,000 crore. About 46 per cent of the production is exported making the industry as one of the few sectors with high export intensity. It also provides employment to large sections of people, particularly women and economically weaker sections of the society, he added.
