Prisoners continue hunger strike for second day
Varanasi, Feb 28 (UNI) Prisoners of the Shivpur Central Jail continued hunger strike for the second day here today in support of their demands, including change in the jail manuals.
Despite all efforts made by the jail and district officials, including District Magistrate Veena Kumari Meena, the prisoners denied to call off their strike.
About 900 prisoners lodged in circle number one of the jail are demanding change in British period's jail manuals, release of prisoners on parole, start of employment guarantee scheme by the Union government and release of poor, helpless and mentally deranged prisoners.
Superintendent of Police (city) Rajiv Mehrotra and Additional District Magistrate Indra Vikram Singh also visited the jail premises to convince the prisoners.
Rapid Action Force has also been deployed around the jail premises for security reasons.
