Local farmers in Singur assault government officials
Singur, Hooghly, Feb 25 (UNI) About a hundred local farmers at Bajemeliya village under Singur police station today assaulted government officials, including a Block Development Officer and a Panchayat Samity member, to voice protest against the Tata Motors small car project.
Officer in-harge Priyabrata Bakshi said the villagers assaulted BDO Prasenjit Chakraborty and Singur Panchayat Samity president Ranjit Mondol when they had gone to the village for undertaking the survey work of a road construction project.
The agitators also damaged two vehicles and pelted stones at the officials. Later, policemen rushed to the spot and rescued them.
A case had been registered in this connection and an investigation was on. However, no one had been arrested so far, the OC added.
