Water released into Patiala feeder canal
Chandigarh, Feb 23 (UNI) The Punjab Irrigation Department today formally released water into the first Patiala feeder canal after it was remodelled by the State Government.
At a brief ceremony at Manpur headworks, near Doraha in Ludhiana district, water was released slowly in the canal. The Government had spent a total sum of Rs 25 crore on the strengthening and remodelling of 25 km section of the canal.
Congratulating the officials of the Irrigation Department, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said the project would provide a great relief to farmers of Malwa region in Patiala, Sangrur and Mansa districts which were largely dependent on canal irrigation.
He said the augmentation of the canal's carrying capacity would help optimally utilize the water available for surface irrigation and also help arrest the alarming decline in the ground water in the region.
