TNAU files complaint against agitators
Coimbatore, Feb 23 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) today lodged a complaint with local police against some farmers and environmentalists for entering the university campus and damaging trial crops to protest testing of Genetically Modified (GM) crops.
In a release here, TNAU Registrar P Santhana Krishnan said the members of Erode Organic Farmers led by its secretary Selvam and Pasumai Thayagam Deputy Secretary Sathriya Sekar entered the campus and damaged the plants.
He said the GM trials were conducted with the approval of Department of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering and Approval Committee (GEAC) with specified bio-safety norms.
Certain vested interests were working against scientific progress in agriculture with hidden agenda, he added.
