Telecom subscriber base touches 281.62 mn in January

New Delhi, Feb 22: Telecom regulator TRAI today said the number of telephone connections stood at 281.62 million with addition of 8.74 million subscribers during January 2008 as compared to 272.88 million subscribers in December 2007. There was an addition of 8.11 million subscribers in December 2007, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said in a statement. The overall tele-density stood at 24.63 per cent at the end of January 2008 as against 23.89 per cent in December 2007, it added.

In the wireless segment, 8.77 million subscribers were added in January 2008 as against the addition of 8.17 million subscribers a month ago. This is a highest ever addition in a month till date, the statement added. The total wireless subscriber base, including GSM, CDMA and WLL(F), stood at 242.40 million at the end of January 2008.

In the wireline segment, the subscriber base saw a slight decline to 39.22 million in January 2008 as against 39.25 million subscribers in December 2007. The broadband subscriber base has reached 3.24 million by the end of January 2008 as compared to 3.13 million by the end of December 2007.
