It was while serving her prison term on February 22, 1944, Kasturba Gandhi died at Pune's Agha Khan Palace.

Ms Singh recalled that in his autobiography, Mahatma Gandhi wrote about his relationship with Kasturba, and how he imposed upon her his radical ideas about celibacy, the simple life and the removal of untouchability. She said he has also described himself as ''a cruelly kind husband'' .

''But in effect it was Kasturba who had a lasting impact on Gandhi, which was responsible in many ways in transforming him into a Mahatma, she said.
