SC to have 30 judges, up from 25: Cabinet

New Delhi, Feb 21 (UNI) The government today decided to raise the number of Supreme Court judges from 25 to 30, excluding the Chief Justice, to speed up delivery of justice.

A Bill will be introduced in Parliament to amend the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956, for the purpose.

The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, an official spokesperson told reporters.

The move is expected to improve the efficiency of the apex court and benefit the litigants.
