Agartala, Feb 20: About ten students of National Institute of Technology(NIT), Tripura, was shifted to Agartala Government Medical College, following clashes among the students on Feb 19.

NIT sources here today said that the situation took an ugly turn as some of final year students beat up their first year-mates, who had been agitating for the better infrastructure of the institute when the official of IT Company Wipro was conducting campus recruitment programme.

First year students organised the agitation demanding the modernization and re-orientation of the laboratories, augmentation of computer facilities and library modernisation but the final year students had asked them to stop the agitation at least before the outsiders.

However, the students continued their agitation and Wipro representative left the Institute after taking interview of only a few students and later senior students picked up about 45 agitating students and detained them in a room of the Institute hostel. Meanwhile, at least 16 first year students were severely beaten up by their seniors and ten of them shifted to the hospital.

Director-in-charge of NIT Professor Prasun Chakrabarty said, ''It is completely unfortunate to witness such an unruly thing in an educational institution'' and admitted the lack infrastructure in the institute.
