Ranchi, Feb 20 : Ranchi, the hometown of Indian one-day team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, erupted in joy after India narrowly beat Sri Lanka in an Adelaide one-dayer on Tuesday.

Fans came out on to the streets and smeared each other with colour after the two-wicket win.

"Dhoni has proved that he is a very good captain. He played well in match. He was 50-not out which is quite good. He has made the people of Jharkhand proud," said Kanwaljeet Singh, a fan.

"India struggled a lot to win. Dhoni lived up to our expectations," added Rishabh, another fan.

Replying to Sri Lanka's 238 for six, India scored 239 for 8 with rest three balls to spare. Yuvraj Singh with 76 and Dhoni with an unbeaten 50 helped India to recover from a dismal 30 odd for 3 to post a win. Kumar Sangakkara was named man of the match for his 128. Skipper Mahela Jayawardene scored 71.

The top two teams go into a best-of-three finals, which starts on March 2.
