UPA Government committed to welfare of minorities : Lalu

Supaul, Feb 13 (UNI) Railway Minister Lalu Prasad today said Prime Minister's 15-point programmes for the welfare of Muslims and other minorities were being implemented in 90 districts of the country, identified by the Sachhar Committee.

Addressing a function at Anjuman Islamia Arabia institute near here, Mr Prasad said several measures had been taken by the UPA Government for ameliorating the lot of the Muslim community.

For the first time since Independence, more than 2.5 million students of the Muslim community had been provided with scholarship of Rs 350 each to continue education, he added.

More than 100 Kasturba Gandhi schools would be opened across the country for students belonging to the of Muslim community and underprivileged sections, he stated.

Castigating the NDA for its attempt to allure Muslims to its fold, Mr Prasad said it would yield no result as the minorities would no more fall into trap of the saffron brigade and added that the gimmicks did not work always.

Railways had earned a profit of Rs 45,000 crore while it was running into losses during the NDA regime at the Centre, he said adding the turnaround of the Railways had inspired the students of premier business institutes across the globe to seek tips from him for turning a sick organisation into a profitable one.
