Amritsar records minus 1.4 degrees Celsius

Chandigarh, Feb 13 (UNI) People continued to shiver under the unabated cold wave in North-West region of the country with the mercury plunging to minus 1.4 degrees Celsius at Amritsar and Adampur in Punjab today.

Cold surface winds blew across the region as the night temperatures stayed below normal by three to seven degrees Celsius at most places.

Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions prevailing in most parts of Punjab and many parts of Haryana were likely to continue for the next two days. Ground frost may occur at many places in Punjab and few places in Haryana during the next two nights, according to the weather office here.

Spine-chilling cold wave lashed the holy city of Amritsar and Adampur, near Jalandhar, as the night temperature dipped to minus 1.4 in the twin towns of Punjab. The mercury was seven degrees below normal at Amritsar.

Halwara Airforce station, near Ludhiana, recorded the minimum temperature at 1.6 degrees while the border town of Pathankot was cold at 3.0 degrees Celsius.

Cold wave also prevailed in Patiala and Ludhiana, recording the minimum temperature at 3.1 degrees and 4.0 degrees respectively, while Bhatinda recorded 4.2 degrees celsius.

Cold wave also swept Haryana as the minimum temperature hovered around three to seven degrees below normal in the state.

The minimum dipped to 1.8 degrees, seven degrees down, at Karnal while Ambala registered 3.5 degrees, six degrees below normal.

Narnaul registered the minimum temperature at 3.7 degrees, four degrees below normal, followed by Rohtak showing 5.3 degrees.

Cold wave also swept Chandigarh and its adjoining areas as the mercury remained low. The city recorded the minimum at 5.2 degrees Celsius.

Himachal Pradesh was also under the imapct of cold wave conditions with Sundernagar in Mandi district recording minus 0.3 degrees while Bhuntar in Kullu district registered 0.2 degrees, three degrees below normal.

Shimla and its adjoining areas also reeled under severe cold wave with the minimum settling at 0.7 degrees, two degrees below normal.

The cold wave also continued unrelentingly in the tribal areas of the state. Kalpa in Kinnuar district recorded the night temperature at minus 8.7 degrees Celsius.

Jammu and Kashmir continued to groan under intense cold wave with Srinagar recording minus 6.3 degrees while Jammu registered 3.1 degrees, six degrees below normal.

The Weather Office has predicted mainly Sunny days in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh during the next 48 hours.
