Queen guitarist Brian May didn't know Freddie Mercury was gay

London, Feb 9: Queen guitarist Brian May has revealed that he didn't realise for years that his bandmate Freddie Mercury was gay.

The 60-year-old guitarist, who formed the band with Mercury in 1970, said that the lead singer seemed just 'flamboyant' and not homosexual.

"When I shared a room with him on tour in the early days I can assure you it was girls who generally stayed overnight," The Sun quoted May, as telling 'Q' magazine.

"But he seemed to be what these days you would call metrosexual.

"He was into his hair, his clothes - he definitely led the way with regard to preening," he added

Mercury had died of an AIDS-related illness in 1991.

"Freddie was probably more shy than any of us and his way of coping with that was to act like a god on stage," May said.
