Cong MLA demands cancellation of BJP nominations

Agartala, Feb 9: Senior Congress leader Surajit Datta today demanded cancellation of the nominations of all BJP candidates for the Assembly election in Tripura.

After meeting with Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) G S G Ayyanger, he informed the media that the BJP candidates had no legal right to contest the election as its state president was challenged in the court by the party workers themselves.

He said, ''Mr Nilmani Deb, president of BJP state unit, was removed from his post by an order, passed by a local court on February one, and the BJP national executive has been directed to appoint an interim president till final disposal of the case, but no such appointment has been made so far. '' ''According to the BJP party constitution, the removal of party president is automatically accompanied and followed by removal or invalidation of state committee. Even then the BJP filed 49 nominations for the election, which is illegal.'' Following the court order, the party had appointed Mr Ranjit Majumdar, organising secretary of the BJP sate unit, for allotment of symbols but he used stamp of the existing committee, which was also illegal, he assertd.

Meanwhile, the CEO said he would examine the complaint before finalisation of the candidates for the February 23 election to the 60-member Tripura Assembly.
