Sena urges governor not to nominate politicians to council

Mumbai, Feb 8 (UNI) Shiv Sena has urged Maharashtra Governor S M Krishna to only select prominent personalities from different walks of life, when he nominates 12 members to the legislature council.

Talking to reporters here, Sena leader Diwakar Raote cited constitutional provisions to state that the nominated members have to be well known in their respective fields.

However, in the recent years, the constitutional provisions have not been followed and the ruling party has seen the nomination of 12 members by the Government to the Upper House of the state legislature as a golden opportunity to accomdate their party workers, he alleged.

The demand was submitted through a memorandum to the Governor.

This assumes significance as the 12 members nominated by the Governor are due to retire this month.

'' If the Rajya Sabha can get distinguished members like Prithviraj Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar, Dara Singh, Hema Malini, Fali Nariman, Nirmala Deshpande, Nana Deshmukh among others, the Legislative council should also have distinguished persons of the state, from the field of literature, art, science, co-operative movement and social work, as its members,'' Mr Raote said.

As per article 200 of the Constitution, if the government acts in a manner which is not in the interest of the state or as per the constitution and cannot be challenged in the court of law, it can be rejected by the Governor, Mr Raote stated.
