Mah: Nirupam detained; Shinde arrested

Mumbai, Feb 5: Congress spokesperson Sanjay Nirupam and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader and MLA Bala Nandgaokar were today detained as precautionary measure, while MNS spokesperson Shishir Shinde and 35 others were arrested by the police in connection with Sunday's violence in the metropolis.

Mr Nandgaokar, speaking to UNI over the phone, said he had been picked up at around 0930 hrs and asked to sit in the DCP's office at Matunga. Mr Nandgaokar said no police officer had spoken to him yet and he had been made to sit in the visiting room of the DCP's office. Mr Nirupam, meanwhile, was detained at Dadar while he and his supporters were on their way to stage a ''dharna'' outside the residence of MNS chief Raj Thackeray.

MNS spokesperson Shishir Shinde, according to his family sources, was arrested early this morning from Bhandup and taken to the Shivaji Park police station to probe his involvement in the attack on Samajwadi Party activists on Sunday.

Apart from Mr Shinde, the police also arrested 35 other MNS activists. All of them were produced before the court of metropolitan magistrate R D Agarwal in the afternoon, and were released on bail of Rs 3000 each.
