Chennai, Feb 4: Police have arrested a man for abducting a three-year-old girl child from the city and selling her to gypsies for Rs 30 at Sullurpet on the Tamil Nadu-Andhra border. The child, abducted last month, was rescued by a Special team of Police yesterday and the person, Ibrahim (44), was arrested.

Ibrahim was a platform dweller, who eked out a living by burning incense in shops and houses. He had befriended the girl's parents and abducted her. While selling the girl to the gypsies for a measely sum, he had demanded Rs 1000 and told them that the child was found abandoned at a Railway Station.

His ploy to act as a good samaritan and to make a quick buck showed that he was the mastermind behind the kidnap.
Ibrahim also told the parents of the girl that he found their daughter at Sullurpet and demanded Rs 5000 from them as cash award, for providing information about the whereabouts of her.

As a complaint had already been pending before the Mylapore police, a Special team acting on in the information provided by the girl's mother, rushed to Sullurpet and rescued the child. On interrogation the gypsies said the child, indeed, was sold to them by Ibrahim, whose true colours came to light and is cooling his heels behind the bars.
