8 killed, 21 hurt in accident near Amravati

Nagpur, Feb 3 (UNI) At least eight persons, including four women and three children, were killed and 21 others injured, 10 of them seriously, when their tractor-trolley overturned in Amravati district in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra today.

According to the police, the trolley, laden with bags of grain, got detached from the tractor while negotiating a steep ascent on the road. It rolled back and overturned near village Nardu, about 35 kilometres from Amravati. Those travelling on the trolley were either crushed under the bags or were thrown off the vehicle, police added.

The victims have been identified as Nilesh Ramdas Sawalkar (12), Rekha Bharat Jawarkar (15), Samoti Ramdas Sawalkar (30), Durga Nana Jawarkar (32), Sunibai Manaji Sawalkar (38), Laxman Mangi Chatur (60), Sanjay Harikisan Jawarkar (12) and Tulsi Harikisan Jawarkar (40), they said.

Of these, seven died on the spot, while Tulsi Jawarkar succumbed to her injures in hospital, police said, adding, Sanjay and Tulsi were residents of Mangrud in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh (MP).

The vehicle was on its way to Dedhtalai in MP carrying the grain for sale in the weekly market there, police said, adding, three of the injured have been admitted to hospital in Amravati, while the others were undergoing treatment at Dharni in the district.
