11 killed, 40 injured in Ahmedabad hotel collpase

Ahmedabad, Feb 3: At least 11 people were feared to have been killed and 40 seriously injured when a five-storey hotel near Kalupur railway station collapsed this morning.

According to fire brigade officials, Shakunt, a five-story hotel opposite Kalupur railway station, caved in like a pack of cards at 0900 hrs. More than 50 people were still buried under the debris. According to people living in the same area, most of the victims were students who had come to Ahmedabad to appear in a railway recruitment board examination, which was to be held today.

Details of the victims were awaited.

Relief and rescue work was on and as news of the cave-in spread like wildfire, senior officials of Ahmedabad corporation and some members of Gujarat Legislative Assembly rushed to the spot.
