Roads blocked to protest arrest of women

Imphal, Feb 2: Hundreds of people at Mayang Langjing in Imphal West today blocked the main roads demanding immediate release of eight women, who were arrested for protesting against the Republic Day celebrations.

The roads were blocked from 0500 hrs and will continue till 1700 hrs today. Imphal West Police Superintendent Clay Khongsai said the women were arrested for protesting against the Republic Day celebrations. He also said the women were not aware for what they were protesting.
On interrogation the arrested disclosed they were called out from their houses by some unidentified persons and made to pose in front of cameras, the SP said.

''It is quite clear that these women were victimised by some anti-nationals for their own interest,'' the SP said.

Earlier, the militant groups of the North Eastern region had given a call to boycott the Republic day celebrations.
