Six persons sentenced to 7 yrs RI in fake currency case
Salem, Tamil Nadu, Jan 31 (UNI) A local court today convicted and sentenced six people to seven years rigorous imprisonment in a counterfeit currency case, involving a face value of Rs 50 lakh.
Delivering the judgement after a gap of over five years, Chief Judicial Magistrate D Krupanidhi also slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 each on the accused - Selvem (44), Venkatachalam (28), Surendran (31), Subramani (41), Sankar (45) and Venkatesan (56).
They were arrested at Chinnathirupathi, near here, on December 11, 2002, on the charge of carrying fake currency notes with a face value of Rs 50 lakh in the denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 50.
The convicts confessed to the police that they had procured the fake notes from some persons in Madurai.
