Poultry, poultry products destroyed in Orissa

Baripada, Jan 31 (UNI) Chickens and eggs, suspected to have been imported from neighbouring West Bengal, have been destroyed in Orissa's Mayurbhanj and Kendrapara districts today.

As a preventive measures to check the spread of dreaded bird flu in Orissa, the district administration here have culled chickens and buried them, while the eggs have also been destroyed later in the presence of the police and other officials, Mayurbhanja Chief District Veterinary Officer Nityananda Das.

A report from Baripada said a consignment of 16,170 eggs, brought from West Bengal for the midday meals for school children in Raruan block of Mayurbhanj district, was seized at Bhanjkia while being taken for delivery yesterday.

In another incident, forest officials seized six birds from a person from Midnapore in West Bengal, when he was passing through a forest road under Suliapada range here yesterday. The birds were also culled and buried.

Kendrapara Chief District Veterinary officer Girish Sar said the 75 chicks seized by the Rajnagar Veterinary officials from a West Bengal based vendor yesterday were culled this afternoon after the vendor failed to produce documents about the place of purchase.

Meanwhile, the district administrations of all the border districts of West Bengal and Jharkhand have stepped up their surveillance to check the smuggling of chickens to Orissa.
