Punjab's new pea finds national acceptability

A
newly
developed
variety
of
pea,
namely
Punjab-89
by
the
Punjab
Agricultural
University
(PAU)
has
gained
popularity
at
the
national
level.
This variety has been sent for cultivation to various states including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, according to Dr J S Kanwar, Head, Department of Vegetable Crops of PAU.
A Field Day of this variety was organized in Bulpur village of Kapurthala district wherein vegetable scientists of PAU deliberated on the quality, yield attributes and production technology of the pea variety.
Dr Parminder Singh, District Extension Specialist at the Farm Advisory Service Scheme of PAU at Kapurthala said that farmers are showing keen interest in this variety.
Dr Kanwar while addressing the gathering of farmers in the fields said that vegetable growing is important in contemporary agriculture in relation to enhancing farmers profitability and nutritional security as peas are rich source of proteins and their cultivation is amenable to kitchen gardening.
