Eight charred to death in van accident near Mangalore

Mangalore, Jan 26: Eight people were charred to death and two suffered burns when the van in which they were travelling dashed against an electric post at Kallappu, near here early today.

According to police, the mishap occurred when a Maruti Omni van in which a group of 11 labourers from Bihar were travelling hit a roadside electric pole on the National Highway No 17.

The vehicle caught fire due to the severe impact. Eight of them were burnt to death on the spot. While one of the traveller escaped unhurt after leaping out from the burning car, two others, including the van driver, who suffered burns, were admitted to the district hospital here.

The victims, burnt beyond recognition, were shifted to the hospital mortuary, the police added.
