TN Govt to appoint two DIGs to head Intelligence Wing
Chennai, Jan 25 (UNI) In a bid to strengthen its Intelligence Wing, the Tamil Nadu Government today decided to have two senior police officers in the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police to head the Wing.
An official release here said Shankar Jiwal, Commissioner of Police, Tiruchirapalli city was transferred and posted as DIG of Police Intelligence-II.
A K Viswanathan, the present DIG of Police, Intelligence, was redesignated as DIG of Police Intelligence-I, the release added.
The posting of two senior officers in the Intelligence Wing assumed significance in the backdrop of ''infiltration'' of LTTE into the state and the demand for strengthening the Intelligence.
Congress Legislator C Gnanasekaran, while participating in a debate in the assembly, had congratulated the state ''Q'' branch for arresting LTTE militants, but found fault with the Intelligence Wing.
Mr Gnanasekaran said the Intelligence should own responsibility for having allowed the LTTE to operate and smuggle arms to the LTTE in Sri Lanka for nearly two years, using Tamil Nadu as the base and requested Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to strengthen the Wing.
