Basirhat, Jan 21 (UNI) An adult hyena, possibly strayed from world's biggest mangrove, Sunderbans, was rescued from being drowned by some villagers at a remote village of Bengal, wildlife officials said today.

Forest department officials at Samshernagar in North 24-Parganas said the three feet long hayena was captured by the villagers from the river Raimangal today when the flesh eating animal dived in the river after being chased by some peasants.

Before being swept away by the current, the villagers without caring for life jumped into the water body and evacauted the animal.

The beast was later handed over to the forest officials, who would release the animal in the Baghna forest at Samshernagar after a formal medical check up.
