TA jawan commits suicide in Jammu

Jammu, Jan 21 (UNI) A Territorial Army (TA) jawan allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service weapon at Bari Brahamana area near here in Jammu and Kashmir, defence spokesman said today.

The jawan, identified as Lance Naik Vijay Kumar, 29, of 110 TA Battalion (Madras) shot himself with his Insas rifle at 1320 hrs yesterday, Lt Col S D Goswami told UNI.

''The bullet had pierced through the neck, killing the NCO (non-commissioned officer) on the spot,'' the spokesman said.

The Lance Naik, who belonged to Amrawati Nagar, Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), was in the service for the last 10 years.

An FIR was registered in the Bari Brahamna police station while the army has instituted a Court of Inquiry (COI) to ascertain the cause forcing the soldier to take the extreme step, Lt Col Goswami added.
