DU confers doctorate upon Gordon Brown

New Delhi, Jan 21 (UNI) British Prime Minister Gordon Brown was honoured with an honorary Doctorate of Letters(D Litt) by the Delhi University today.

Vice-President Hamid Ansari, who is the chancellor of the University, conferred the D Litt (Honouris Causa) degree upon the visiting Premier for his outstanding achievements in the field of academics and his commitment to human values.

Delhi University Vice Chancellor Deepak Paintal lavished praise on Mr Brown at a special convocation ceremony held in the varsity premises amid heavy security restrictions in view of the Republic Day.

The British Prime Minister said he considered it a privilege to get the degree from the Delhi University.

Describing Delhi University as one of the finest educational institutions in the country, he said it fulfilled the academic aspirations of students from as many as 60 countries.

Mr Brown also recalled the traditional ties between India and Britain.

He later inaugurated the UK Sports Initiative at the University ground.

Mr Brown arrived here yesterday on a two-day state visit.
