Lucknow, Jan 21: The Uttar Pradesh Congress today asked Governor T V Rajeswar to direct Chief Minister Mayawati against spreading political ill will and suppressing the Opposition.

In a memorandum to the Governor against lodging of an FIR against party MLA Pankaj Malik under the SC/ST Act, the Congress said the move was in a bad political taste. ''The MLA had only protested the use of unparliamentary language against the national leaders by the district development officer of Muzaffarnagar, he never used insulting language against the official. In fact, video footage of TV channels shows that the official attacked the MLA with a tiffin box,'' the memorandum read.

The memorandum also asked the Governor to direct the Chief Minister against spreading political ill will and supression of political parties. ''We also demand lodging of a cross FIR against the DDO...a probe can later decide who the real culprit is,'' said Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Pramod Tiwari after meeting Governor Rajeswar.

Recently, Chief Minister Mayawati had said that Congress MLA Pankaj Mallik who had allegedly assaulted a Dalit district development officer in Muzaffarnagar, would be booked under SC/ST Act.

Ms Mayawati alleged that Congress had always harassed the dalits and now her government will teach them a lesson to mend their ways. ''These opposition parties are always trying to create confusion among the masses about the central SC/ST Act but my government will not compromise with any atrocities against the dalits,'' she observed.

Hitting hard on Congress, she said the party, during its 60-year rule, had crushed the dalits to the ground while it was still continuing in the states where it was in power.

Congress MLA Pankaj Mallik had allegedly assaulted DDO Muzaffarnagar Brahma Swaroop during a meeting. The official had lodged a case against the MLA and police had arrested eight people till now who were with the legislator at the time of incident.

In his complaint the DDO alleged that the MLA had manhandled him and issued life threats, besides, using derogatory words against him.
