Tiruchirapalli, Jan 15: The Trichy Regional Engineering College Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Park (TREC-STEP) has planned to install a hi-tech mini tool room here at a cost of Rs 14.25 crore, according to TREC-STEP Executive Director R M P Jawahar.

The proposal was aimed at creating an innovative platform for development of globally competitive engineering designs and products and encouraging young engineers to venture into small and medium enterprises.

The initiative was in accordance with the recommendations of The National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council which had recommended similar tool rooms else where in the country. The TREC-STEP had forwarded the proposal to the State Industries Commissioner for formal approval.

The tool room would also be useful to the small and medium in and around the district to diversify their operations to match the global demand.

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) would also install a platform at TREC-STEP enabling manufacture of new products with tool making facility such as spark erosion and wire-cut electrode discharge and multiplex machines.

Under the proposal, Mr Jawahar said the TREC-STEP would partner Trichy District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association and BHEL Small Industries Association who have agreed to fund ten per cent of the cost of the mini tool room.
