Woman poisoned, another commits suicide

Srinagar, Jan 14: One person committed suicide and the body of another person was recovered while a woman was poisoned in the Kashmir valley overnight, official sources said.

They said one Mohammad Amin Mir consumed some poisonous substance in his house at Kadlabal, Pampore, in south Kashmir last night. He was rushed to hospital where he was declared brought dead. However, it was not known why Mir took this extreme step.

The trend of committing suicide, particuarly among women, has not come down even after a fatwa issued by muslim ulmas, declaring the act as un-Islamic and against the teachings of Prophet Mohammad.

Sources said body of one Ashiq Hussain Lone, a resident of Naidkhai, Sumbal, was fished out from river Jehlum at Kote Payeen. In another incident, 20-year-old Shabnam, wife of Manzoor Ahmad Lone was admitted to Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) at Soura in a critical condition today.

She had been poisoned, doctors said, adding that police has registered a case and started investigation.
