Cess to be levied on boat rides in Varanasi

Varanasi, Jan 14, 2008 : A cess will be imposed on income earned from tourists' joy boat rides in Varanasi from January 15. It has put boatmen in the holy city of India's northern Varanasi in a quandary.

They are opposing the tax since they fear that with their already insufficient earnings, they will not be able to earn a decent livelihood. However, the authorities claim that the tax is imposed to take better care of the famous tourist destination.
