SC refuses permit to bull fight

New Delhi, Jan 11 : The Supreme Court refused on Friday to permit 'Jallikattu' event as it involves cruelty to animals, during Pongal festival in Tamilnadu. 'Jallikattu' is a bull fighting event held during Pongal festival.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan said, "We are not inclined to vacate the stay ordered by the court on the event."

However, SC allowed another event 'Rekla' the bullock cart race to be organised under the supervision of authorities.

In the wake of many accidents over the years, animal rights groups have opposed the fight as it has injured several hundred animals and people. These races have also led to group clashes and emerged as a battleground to settle personal scores.

Augmenting its voice for animal protection, the Supreme Court banned Jallikattu.

While demanding a ban on sport, animal activists claimed that the sport is cruel and several people were killed in the sport. Giving an example, last year one person was killed while several others were injured in Jallikattu.
