Shiv Sena assails Delhi Govt for inaction on Afzal's file

New Delhi, Jan 10 (UNI) The Shiv Sena today virulently assailed the Delhi government for not taking any action on the file relating to the mercy petition of Parliament attack convict and death row inmate Afzal Guru.

Lamenting that when the Central government, despite accepting an increase in terrorist activities and incidents, was not disposing off the mercy petition of Afzal and thus delaying his execution, the party claimed such ''short-sighted'' policies of the ruling Congress would cost the country dearly.

''All the interrogation of arrested terrorists has revealed that their activities were meant to pressurise the government to free Afzal and other dreaded terrorists from custody,'' a statement quoting the Shiv Sena's Noth India chief Jaibhagwan Goyal said, urging the government to send a clear and tough message by executing the Supreme Court sentence.

''The Sheila Dikshit government, in its hunger for votes and coming to power a third time is sitting on the file,'' he said, charging it with placing the interests of all the country's people on stake in its ''lust for power.'' He said if the Delhi government did not act fast on the matter, then his party would lead a people's agitation on the issue.
