Chennai, Jan 10: Over 35 International and Indian art historians and conservationists are expected to deliberate on mural paintings at an International seminar organised by Madras Craft Foundation here from January 23 to 27.

Addressing a press conference yesterday, Madras Craft Foundation president Deborah Thiagarajan said the seminar titled 'Paintings Narratives: Mural Painting in the 13th-19th Centuries' would focus primarly on the traditions of South and South East Asia and would concentrate on important conservation issues surrounding the paintings. She said the Foundation had documented the murals, which were deteriorating in over 40 temples in Tamil Nadu.

The Foundation had asked the temple authorities to preserve the paintings, which exemplified the rich culture and tradition of South India.

Speaking on the occasion, Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Official P S Sriraman said the ASI would launch an intiative to take up the preservation of murals in Tamil Nadu.
