Police lathicharge lawyers in Ajmer, 30 injured

Ajmer, Jan 7 (UNI) Over thirty people. including half a dozen police personnel. were injured today as police resorted to lathicharge to disperse a group of lawyers and students demanding the withdrawl of an assault case against Ajmer Municipal Council Chairman Dharmendra Gehlot at the district collectorate.

Mr Gehlot was also injured in the police action.

Following the lathicharge, the agitationists disrupted traffic and set afire a Roadways bus besides damaging a few vehicles.

The agitationists also closed the shops in the area in protest against the lathicharge.

The police had registered a case of assault against Mr Gehlot two days ago at Christianganj police station accusing him of beating up a police personnel while mediating in a road accident case.

Mr Gehlot, an advocate by profession, had been a ABVP leader before he became the Municipal Council Chairman prompting the lawyers and students to take to streets in support of him.
