Illicit timber recovered in Kashmir, smuggler arrested
Srinagar, Jan 7 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir police arrested a smuggler in the valley overnight and recovered illegal timber worth lakhs of rupees, official sources said today.
Station House Officer (SHO), Kunzar, in Baramulla district established a naka at village Ogumna following a tip off that smugglers were taking illegal timber to other village, the sources said.
Later, the police seized two horses and recovered illicit deodar timber.
One of the smugglers Abdul Rashid Ganie was arrested while his accomplice Ghulam Ahmed Dar managed to escape under the cover of darkness.
The sources said the police, acting on specific information raided the house of Ghulam Nabi and Javid Ahmad at Hundi Nowshera, Boniyar and recovered 37 sleepers and ten sawn pieces of illicit timber.
Cases under section 379, 6 Forest Act have been registered, the sources added.
