HC orders release of 2,000 cusecs water
Allahabad, Jan 7 (UNI) Allahabad High Court has asked the Uttar Pradesh government to release 2,000 cusecs water from Narrora dam in river Ganga to provide sufficient water during Magh Mela in Allahabad.
The order was passed by a division bench of the HC comprising Justices B S Chauhan and Ashok Bhushan.
Appearing for his state, Uttarakhand advocate general L P Naithani informed the court that 1,000 cusecs extra water was being released from Tehri Dam in river Ganga.
Passing the order in a writ petition filed by Hari Chaitanya Brahmchari, the court fixed January 10, 2008 for further hearing of the writ petition.
The petitioner had filed the PIL for Ganga to be free of pollution and provision of adequate water in the river.
The petitioner had submitted in the HC that in spite of the ban, the tanneries at Kanpur were releasing dirty and polluted water in the holy river.
The HC has also constituted a team of lawyers to inspect the water at Sangam zone and produce a report before the court by the next hearing date.
