Mysterious death of Dalit after being picked up by police

Sangrur, Jan 6 (UNI) The mysterious death of a Dalit youth in the custody of the Haryana police has led to a great deal of resentment amongst members of the Dalit community in Lehra town of the district.

According to official sources the victim identified as Sunil Kumar was picked up by a police party from Tohana in adjoining Haryana at around noon yesterday. Later in the evening of the same day his dead body was dumped by the Haryana cops at his residence without informing the local police.

When the matter was brought to the notice of SSP Arunpal Singh today, he immediately ordered that a post mortem be done.

When contacted the SSP said that after the avaliability of the post mortem report, a case against the Haryana police will be registered if it is prooved that the death occured due to torture in police custody. The victim was picked up by the Haryana police as he was suspected to have been involved in the 'disappearance' of a woman of Tohana.
