New Delhi, Jan 4 (UNI) Come January 15 and those residing or working in Delhi will be required to carry with them proof of their identification to be produced, if necessary, on demand by police officers.

''From January 15, all those residing or working in Delhi will be subjected to random checking wherein they will be required to produce to the police officers proof of their identity- it could be their driving licence, their PAN card, their passport, their ration card or their office ID card,''Delhi Lt Governor said at a press conference here.

So, if you are planning to step out of your home on or after January 15, then you need to carry with you a proof of your identity as you could be subjected to a random check.

Descibing it as a measure being taken from the point of view of security, the Lt Governor said,''Delhi being the Capital of India, anything happening in other parts of the country invariably has its repurcussions here. This is why the nearly 1.6 crore people in Delhi need to stay vigilant and contribute in maintaining law and order in the city.'' Speaking at the press conference, the Lt Governor said there was also a proposal wherein a person living in Delhi and possessing a driving license obtained from any other part of the country would have to get his license revalidated from the All India Automobile Association and the Delhi Traffic Police if he or she wished to drive in the city.

''We want to ensure that the general public in Delhi develops a respect for the rule of the law. People of Delhi will have to develop a respect for the law and regulation. They have to understand to remain within boudaries of the law,''the LG said.

Asking people to remain alert to any suspicious object anywhere, Dr Khanna said ''maintenance of law and order is a joint endeavour between the authorities and the common man. So, while police does its duty to maintain law and order, people also need to stay alert to the presence of any suspicious object. If they come across anything suspicious, they should immediately inform the security agencies.'' UNI AR SHB RK1545
