Over 70 pc BMC education budget unspent

Mumbai, Jan 4 (UNI) The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation had allocated around Rs 1100 crore for education last year but over 70 per cent of the same has remained unutilised despite nine months having elapsed.

The issue was raised in the Standing Committee today by Education Committee chairman Mangesh Satamkar who said the budget has not been utilised because of the inefficiency of the administration.

Mr Satamkar alleged that Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Education) S S Shinde was responsible for the unspent budget and demanded his transfer.

He was supported by other members of the committee who too demanded Mr Shinde's transfer.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Manu Kumar Srivastav, meanwhile, said the administration will clear the schemes and use more than 90 per cent of the remaining budget by the end of the financial year.

Municipal Commissioner Jairaj Phatak, in a press conference, said he will look into the charges against Mr Shinde and appropriate action will be taken. The decision of the transfer of an official cannot be taken in a committee meeting by passing a no confidence motion, he pointed out.
