Chidambamram to review K'taka Financial position: Governor

Bangalore, Jan 4 (UNI) Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram will review the financial position, including funds availability and physical growth made during last nine months, in Karnataka, Governor Rameshwar Thakur said today.

Addressing newspersons after chairing executive meeting here, Mr Thakur said that Mr Chidambamram, during his recent visit to the City had promised to hold a review meeting and take stock of the financial position some time this month.

Expressing satisfaction over the performance of the government under President's rule, Mr Thakur assured the people of the state that "no works in Karnataka would suffer for want of funds".

He said that the government would prepare a detailed report on the flood relief works undertaken and the amount spent so far and quantum of money required and submit the Report to the Centre.

Mr Thakur said that Union Home Minister Shivaraj Patil, who held a meeting of the officials of the state home department recently, had reviewed both flood and drought relief works, law and order situation and also preparedness for holding elections to the state assembly.

Declining to reply to a question as to when election to the Legislative Assembly will be held, Mr Thakur said that the main focus of the government under President's rule was to conduct "Free and fair elections".

To give fillip to the state administrative machinery a meeting of all the Deputy Commissioners have been convened this month. "The agenda of the meeting was yet to be finalised" he said.

He said that the Centre had sanctioned over Rs 80 crores last year to modernise the police forces in the state. So far over Rs 56 crores had been spent for modernisation of police forces including providing modern arms, equipment and strengthening of communication system. "While appreciating the progress made in modernising the police force, the Center has promised to release additional grant of Rs 20 crores soon", he added.

The Executive meeting also decided to release Rs Six crore for establishment of Institute of Dairy Sciences and Technology proposed to set up in Gulbarga.
