Govt announces compensation for Kandhamal riot victims

Bhubaneswar, Dec 31 (UNI) Orissa government today announced a compensation of Rs one lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to the kins of each of the three killed in the communal clash in Kandhamal.

The decision was taken at a high-level meeting convened to review the situation and chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

The meeting, among other things, discussed the issue of assistance to the riot victims, caste certificate and the law and order situation in the district.

The government also decided to provide Indiraawas houses to all riot-affected people whose houses were torched and an assistance of Rs 10,000 from the Chief Minister's relief fund to those whose houses were partially damaged during the communal violence.

The Chief Minister directed the officials to provide polythene, blankets, sarees, dhoti, utensils and food and distribute relief according to the needs of the riot victims.

Also present at the meeing was Director General of Police G C Nananda who said no untoward incident has been reported in the district since December 27.

The situation in the district was slowly limping back to normalcy and the people who had left their houses were returning.

In addition, a peace committee was being formed to restore normalcy in the region, the DGP said.
