SULFA cadre arrested one for AGP MLA assassination bid

Tezpur, Dec 29 (UNI) A surrendered ULFA (SULFA) cadre was arrested by Sonitpur district police near Darrang college here in connection with the assassination bid on AGP legislator Padma Hazarika on December 13.

Police said here today that SULFA Jitu Bhuyan was arrested last night.

A case had been registered against Bhuyan and he was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate court.

Bhuyan had joined the outfit in 1990 and had returned to the mainstream in 1993.

Mr Hazarika, a popular leader of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), was shot at by unknown assassins near Hazarimal centre of Sootea town late on December 13 night.

He suffered multiple bullet and grenade splinter injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Apollo hospital in New Delhi.
