Bring out legislation to protect doctors: Majhi

bhubaneswar, dec 28 (uni) suitable action will be taken against people assaulting the doctors on duty, orissa health minister duryodhan majhi said.

Inaugurating the 67th annual conference of the association of surgeons of india (asi) here yesterday, mr majhi said several incidents of attack on doctors has surfaced time and again from different parts of the state.

''the mischief mongers will not be spared and strong action will be taken against them,'' he said.

He added that such conferences would help the doctors, especially surgeons, to update their knowledge as many developments were taking place across the world in the field of surgery.

Stating that several medical colleges were coming up in the state, he said it would help to provide better service to the people.

Outgoing asi president c palanivelu called upon the centre and all state governments to bring out a legislation to provide security to the surgeons to carry out their practices without risk.

Dr palanivelu said this was needed in view of the recent supreme court judgement declaring the medical practice as a service.

He said the train, a training programme introduced by the board of head of the department of surgery, should be extended to all the medical colleges in the country not only for the benefit of surgeons but also other practising surgeons.

Citing that about 70 per cent of the people were not covered under medical insurance, the outgoing president said the government should try to bring out a legislation for them.

He also emphasised on the development of indigenous equipment to bring down the cost and provide health care to people at an affordable cost.

New asi president ahamed abdul hai said a great stride had taken place around the world and efforts should be made to help the common people reap the benefit at an afforable cost.
