Court remands Imam in jail on dowry charges

Barasat, Dec 21 (UNI) A local court here today remanded the Imam of Jama Mosque at Champadali in North 24-Parganas to judicial custody for 11 days.

Imam Hafiz A. Hamid(55) was arrested under section 498 of IPC on an FIR registered against him and his son, Obayedullah, for alleged torture for dowry on his daughter-in-law Meherunnisa.

The FIR was lodged by Meherunnisa' uncle Sk Ali Ahmed with Barasat police station.

Obayedullah was evading arrest police said.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Sumitra Roy, after hearing both the public prosecutor and the defence lawyer rejected a bail plea and remanded Imam Hamid to judicial custody for 11 days directing to produce the accused on January 1 before the court.
