Guwahati, Dec 21 (UNI) The Rohmoria Gorakhohonia Pratirudh Sangram Manch (RGPSM), a conglomerate of groups demanding immediate anti-erosion measures in Rohmoria area of Assam's Dibrugarh district, today announced of intensified agitation to press for its demands.

The RGPSM leaders, at a press conference in Dibrugarh, called for a 12-hour Dibrugarh district bandh on December 24 against the alleged failure of the government to take concrete anti-erosion measures.

The group staged a national highway blockade yesterday.

About 20 people were injured in the police lathicharge to lift the blockade.

The Brahmaputra causes massive erosion annually in the Rohmoria area and vast tracts of human-inhabited land and agricultural land are washed away by floods every year.

Several organisations of the area have come together to form the RGPSM to unitedly press for effective anti-erosion measures.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh visited the area last January and Union Minister of State for Water Resources Saifuddin Soz also visted the area last month.

Though the Central leaders and the state government had assured of effective steps, the local people alleged that no concrete measures had materialised yet.
