Alert issued to people living near river Sankarabharani

Puducherry, Dec 20 (UNI) The Puducherry administration has issued an alert to the people residing on the banks of river Sankarabharani to move to safety as water would be released from the Veedur dam this afternoon.

According to official sources, the water level in the Veedur dam, with a capacity of 32ft, was 30ft and water would be released due to increased inflow. The water would flow into river Sankarabharani, causing flood.

The bed dams at Manalippet and Suthukkeni were also overflowing.

Following the alert, revenue authorities were taking necessary steps to ensure the safety of the people.

Meanwhile, the people here heaved a sigh of relief as rain stopped since this morning.
